Free Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Picks
The next step is to get handicapping! Let’s get to know the best horses in the 2021 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.
Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Favorites
#14 Dubawi Legend will probably go off favoured, after a second-place finish in the Dewhurst Stakes (G1), a proper British Group 1. Between that and his tactical speed, he is appealing, and he also has the pedigree for the stretch out. However, be careful in the win pool, as he will be a fairly short price going the first-time route from a tough gate.
Trainer Charlie Appleby has a pair, though both drew tough gates. #1 Modern Games is the more appealing of the two. He has won three of his last four, is tactically versatile and is well-bred for the stretch to the mile. #2 Albahr, the Summer Stakes winner, fits on his best but his hit-or-miss nature from the gate makes him a likely underlay.
#10 Portfolio Company is trained by top turf trainer Chad Brown and gets excellent West Coast grass rider Flavien Prat in the irons. His tactical speed should help him handle this near-outside gate, and he has proven his stamina, as all three of his previous races have been two turns. Though he must turn tables on Coinage, Portfolio Company gets a bit more pace to chase this time.
Other Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Contenders
#4 Tiz the Bomb is the most intriguing horse in the entire field. His trainer Ken McPeek has caught fire lately and has a chance to continue his hot streak on the biggest stage. Tiz the Bomb has the tactical versatility to handle this large field, as he has already shown. He will need a career-best, but he has the tools to do so.
#3 Dakota Gold will take the interest off a big-figure victory in the Nownownow Stakes on September 26. However, there are reasons to be skeptical at a shorter price. The relatively inside gate is a drawback, and it is even more of a concern that trainer Danny Gargan tends to underperform on the biggest stages.
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Longshot
Though #5 Slipstream has yet to go two turns, his trainer Christophe Clement excels when stretching horses out to two turns for the first time and he has the pedigree to make it a mile. His last two wins have come on turf, showing two different running styles, giving him tactical options in a large field.
