The 2013 Breeders’ Cup World Championships go this weekend on Friday and Saturday at Santa Anita Park, with five races on Friday and nine more on Saturday. The fourth race on Saturday’s card is the $1,000,000 Turf Sprint, for three-year-olds and up racing 6 1/2 furlongs. The race is significant in that there are questions surrounding all the contenders, as several will be coming off lengthy layoffs, while for some others in the 14-horse field it appears they have had their best races on polytrack or dirt surfaces, and how they will perform on the turf is a question.

The lukewarm 4-1 favorite is the defending champ, Mizdirection. She hasn’t run since June, when she finished fifth in the Grade I Just A Game Stakes at Belmont, but prior to that she had won three straight graded-stakes events on the Santa Anita turf, and she has won seven of eight on the track overall, since a second place finish in her first lifetime start. Just behind her at 5-1 are Chips All In, with two Grade III wins to his name this year, and the filly Reneesgotzip, third in this last year.

Outside of those, Capo Bastone (8-1) ran third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in 2012, and last time out won the Grade I King’s Bishop Stakes at Saratoga, coming from far back to close quickly in the stretch to win by 2 lengths. Unbridled’s Note (8-1) was second in this race last year as the favorite, and has been in the money in nine of his last 10, including two wins on the Santa Anita turf course. He was third his last race, the Grade III Eddie D. Stakes, behind Chips All In and Boat Trip, who is also in the BC Turf Sprint field at (8-1).
