A field restricted to Ontario-sired horses go to the gate on Sunday in the $125,000 Overskate Stakes at Woodbine. The race is a seven-furlong sprint on the Polytrack. The field of eight is an interesting mix, with some trying to prove they belong in stakes company, and others trying to reclaim past glory. Ultimate Destiny, who had won three in a row, including the Steady Growth Stakes, before finishing eighth in the Grade III Seagrams Cup Stakes is the morning line favorite at 8-5. He will have to come from the outside post, however, and carries high weight of 122 lbs.

Challenging him will be second choice Phil’s Dream (3-1) who was away from racing for almost two years dealing with a bowed tendon injury. Since coming back to the track last April, he’s won four of six at in the upper allowance levels, but could do no better than fourth in the Shepperton Stakes in early August. He finished just ahead of Fifty Proof in that one, and those two will meet again in the Overskate, with Fifty Proof being the longest morning line odds in the field at 20-1.

The others include Pender Harbour (4-1) Canada’s champion three-year-old in 2011 on the strength of winning the second two legs of the Canadian Triple Crown that year. Since then he has four other stakes wins on his resume, as well as a few graded-stakes placings. He’s been off form for much of this year, however, starting the season with two consecutive ninth-place finishes in both the Grade II King Edward and Nijinsky, before getting up for second most recently in the Halton. In with a chance might be Spirit Warnings (6-1) who came four wide to rally for second in the Shepperton.
