It’s a familiar scene that plays itself out regularly in horse racing. A certain horse breaks quickly from the gate, opens up by a number of lengths while setting blazing early fractions, and then can’t sustain the bid, ultimately reeled in and passed by the field when they turn for home. And it certainly looked like that was going to be the case at Woodbine on Monday in the $100,000 Inglorious Stakes, featuring three-year-old fillies going six furlongs on the Polytrack.

Even-money favorite Goldstryke Glory, a BC-bred by Second in Command, shot out of the gate and took command early, opening up by 1 ½ lengths through the first quarter mile, and increasing to 5 ½ lengths through the first half. In doing so, she set what race caller Dan Loiselle termed “impossible” fractions of 21.22 and 42.94, and fans watching the race – not to mention the field chasing her – waited for the inevitable stop. Except that the stop never came, as Goldenstryke Glory continued to widen through the turn and into the lane.

By mid-straight she was out in front by nine, and the outcome was decided. Nearing the finish, jockey Jesse Campbell wound her down, so the eventual margin of victory was 7 ½ lengths over Laughing Falcon, with Cabo Queen making a late charge to get up for third. Goldstryke Glory, who began her racing career last fall at Woodbine, but started this season at Hastings Park, now has three wins, three seconds and a third in eight lifetime starts, for $189,000 in earnings, with the Inglorious her first stakes score in four attempts.
