On Rainbow Bridge didn’t want to be left behind in her second start the way she did in her first. In her maiden bow on June 15, 2013, the two-year-old daughter of Bold Executive lingered in the gate, and then had to make a hard charge to try and close 15 lengths. She didn’t quite get there, finishing third that day as a 14-1 longshot. Her second try was this past Saturday in the $150K Shady Wells Stakes, for two-year-old fillies going 5 ½ furlongs on the Woodbine Polytrack.

Breaking from post 1 under apprentice jockey Skye Chernetz, this time On Rainbow Bridge got a good start, and settled in along the rail, stalking the pace of leader Where’s The Carat, through a quick opening quarter of 22.83. That one held the lead through the turn, until Chernetz angled the Dave Coty-trained On Rainbow Bridge into the two-path and asked her for a run. She responded immediately, sweeping past the leader and drawing clear for a 1 ½-length victory. Paladin Bay finished second, and Where’s the Carat held for third.

The win marked the first Stakes victory for the 20-year-old Chernetz, who is in her second full year of riding, and who was one of three nominees for the Sovereign Award as Canada’s Outstanding Apprentice Jockey in 2012. After a slow start to her rookie campaign, things picked up late in the season for Chernetz, and she finished 2012 with 25 wins from 385 starts. She got off to a much better start in 2013, and with the Shady Wells victory, has already recorded 18 wins from only 169 starts, as well as 19 second and 16 third-place finishes.
