Inaugurated in 2001, this race has been called the Springboard Mile since 2009, and it is rising in importance. The most accomplished horse to contest the race was not actually a winner, though: Will Take Charge, second behind 128-1 longshot Texas Bling in 2012, went on to win the Travers (G1) and take champion three-year-old honours in 2013!

Remington Springboard Mile Favorites
Trainer Steve Asmussen has won six editions of the Springboard Mile, including two of the last three. He has two entrants in this race including likely favourite #5 Classic Moment. A last-out maiden winner at Churchill Downs, he has the pedigree to step up to this one-mile trip and the tactical speed to work a trip. Jockey Stewart Elliott will ride.
Elliott’s presence stands out in particular because he also rode #1 Concept, the other Asmussen entrant, last out. Concept is buried on the fence, meaning he will have to send and may have no choice but to be part of a contested pace. Concept has already won a stakes race over the course but has never stretched out and this field is tougher.
The Intriguing Horses
#9 Osbourne, trained by Ron Moquett, has a serious chance to upset the Asmussen duo. His tactical speed should play well from an outside gate, and he should be fit and ready second off the layoff. Though Osbourne has never stretched out to a route, he has a great pedigree to stretch out this far. And, it is good to see jockey Julien Leparoux ship out to ride.
#3 Bye Bye Bobby will try to make it two Springboard Miles in a row for his trainer Todd Fincher. With a few runners who have speed, it will set up nicely for Bye Bye Bobby if they lock up and go too fast early. This is only Bye Bye Bobby’s second start, but his debut win came in a stakes race against winners, and his pedigree is excellent for the stretch to a mile.
The Bet-Against
#2 Make It Big will take a lot of money, especially with Jose Ortiz in the irons. However, his form has come against Florida-breds at Gulfstream. Now he faces open company, which should be tougher than those state-breds. And, with Gulfstream Park horses often disappointing after running well in weaker races over that track, he will be an underlay this time.
Interesting Longshots
Though #6 Rowdy Rascal also steps up from state-bred foes, he will be a longer price, as he has been facing Oklahoma-breds and does not have such a big-name jockey. But, Rowdy Rascal has great local form with Freddy Manrrique, and looked as good as ever when winning a stakes race at a mile at Remington last time out. He doesn’t need to improve much to be a threat.
#7 Rich Strike has class to prove, as his only win has come against maiden claimers. But, his troubled third last out in a one-mile allowance at Keeneland suggests that he is more than just a claiming type. If he can work a cleaner trip this time and he gets some pace to close into, he should come rolling and be a legitimate late threat.
