Handicapping the Breeders' Cup
Even though he is not the favourite, Tiz the Law is the horse to beat in the 2020 Breeders' Cup Classic. He was unstoppable early this year, winning the Florida Derby, Belmont Stakes, and Travers Stakes, all Grade 1 events. He ran gamely to be second in the 2020 Kentucky Derby, then skipped the Preakness in favour of running in this race. He has been training well at Keeneland for trainer Barclay Tagg, and if he wins he will be crowned the Horse of the Year.
Standing in his way is the trio from the Bob Baffert barn: 5-2 favourite Improbable, 2020 Kentucky Derby winner Authentic, and last year's Three-Year-Old Champion Maximum Security. Improbable has won three major races in a row and defeated Maximum Security last out.
Maximum Security got a major Grade 1 win over the distance in August when he won the Pacific Classic; last year he "won" the Kentucky Derby but was disqualified for interference. If his neck was a little longer, Authentic would have won the Preakness Stakes (G1) and would have been favoured in this race, so a narrow defeat last out should not be held against him.
Some under the radar horses is By My Standards and Tacitus. By My Standards was a top three-year-old last year, but then was off for over half a year. He came back with three straight wins earlier this year, then lost to Improbable and Tom's d'Etat in his summer races before winning at Churchill Downs over Ownedale last out. That runner is in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) earlier on the card. Tacitus has earned $2.9 million without ever winning a major race, but he has been top three in all six of his starts over the distance, and trainer Bill Mott won this race with Cigar in 1995.

Breeders' Cup History
The Breeders' Cup Classic has been won by some of the greatest horses in racing: the mare Zenyatta, the immortal Cigar, the record-setting Ghostzapper, and Kentucky Derby winners such as Unbridled, Ferdinand, American Pharoah, and Sunday Silence. Authentic will look to add his name to that list in the 2020 Breeders' Cup Classic, as he also won the 2020 Kentucky Derby. Belmont Stakes winners A. P. Indy and Drosselmeyer also won the Classic, can Tiz the Law accomplish the double this year?
